When writing a Twitter post, you only have 140 characters to send. You are about to learn 10 tips to fit a novel into your Twitter updates.  

1.      Use Symbols- Use $ instead of dollars, + instead of “and,”  % instead of “percent”

2.      Use TwitterKeys- Go to  www.thenextweb.com/2008/09/16/twitterkeys-enhance-your-twitter-conversations/ to get 200 symbols you can copy and paste in your update box.

3.      Use Abbreviations- FYI (for your information) LOL (laughing out loud), etc

4.      Use Shorter Words- Use “yes” instead of “agreed,” use “mad” instead of “perturbed.”

5.      Avoid Being Wordy- there are many grammar books that can help you with this.

6.      Get Straight to the Point- Don’t say hello, how are you today? Make your point without all the fluff.

7.      Shorten the URL- Use services like www.tinyrurl.com or www.snurl.com

8.      Post Twice- If you can’t get your point across in one post, post two.

9.      Post More Often- If you post often you can get your message out easier than once a month.

10.  Link to Another Page- If can be a challenge to explain detailed points in 140 characters, often it’s necessary to link to other pages. For example, I’m becoming a billionaire before the age of 30 years old, to see how I am doing it, go to www.billionairebythirty.com

When changing a Twitter background you don’t get much room around the content to show off your background. There are a couple issues we can’t change:

1. The Twitter content is always centered on the screen
2. It’s always the same width 760 pixels
3. It’s location is in the same vertical position 70 pixels from the top of the page.

Solution: Choose an image large enough to cover the entire background. A general rule is the resolution should be 1024 x 768, or 1280 x800.

Create an image with a 120- pixel strip, 1024 x768 wide along the left side that you want people to see.

1.      Make sure your username is short, memorable, relevant, and easy to spell. You only have 15 characters or less to work with

2.      Put keywords in your username. Since one of the main reasons I use Twitter is to brand myself, I used my name Josh Fuller in the URL. http://twitter.com/joshfullerguru

3.      Put keywords in the real name. Since I am branding myself, it made sense for me to use my name Josh Fuller, however if I was promoting a company, I could have put the company name. Remember you only have 20 characters max.

4.      Optimize the “One Bio Line”- There is an area where you can add a short bio about yourself. Don’t write aimlessly, give people a reason to follow you. Make it interesting, fun, and “follow worthy.” Here is what I use in my bio line: I’m Josh Fuller, my goal is to become a billionaire before the age of thirty, visit www.billionairebythirty.com. Remember you have 160 characters max.

5.      If you are using Twitter for your business, set up additional Twitter accounts to secure keywords associated with your company’s products and services.

6.      Visit other popular Twitter user pages and see what they are writing about. Notice what is working and what isn’t.

7.      Keep the number of people you’re following equal to the number of your followers. If you are following 2000 and only have 25 followers, this might deter people from following you. You can delete people directly in your account or you can use services like; Friend or Follow http://friendorfollow.com MyTweeple http://www.mytweeple.com/ or “Less Friends” http://lessfriends.com/.

8.      Use your picture to sell yourself. A good picture can go a long way, when someone knows nothing about you but your looks. Remember people are shallow.

9.      Add an interesting background. Don’t just use the default background. Yawwwwwn! Use a picture that highlights your unique personality.

10.  Only post interesting tweets. If you are board with what you write, it’s a good chance others will too.

11.  Add “Follow Me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/joshfullerguru” to all your online pages like; Myspace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Website, Blog, etc.

12.  Have an end objective before you write your article. What do you want the reader to do after they are dong reading? Visit your website, call toll-free number, etc.

13.  Use Tweetlater www.tweetlater.com  to autorespond every time someone follows you. Every time someone follows me, Tweetlater automatically emails them the following: Thx 4 the follow, just created my first blog, looking for feedback, Billionaire By 30-Josh Fuller- CHEERS

14.  Search the top Keywords on Tweeter to know what to write about. Use Tweet Volume www.tweetvolume.com to research each keyword on Twitter.

15.  Put your keywords in each post. I put Josh Fuller in each post. I have posted around 2000 times, that’s a lot of Josh Fuller’s. This is how my Twitter page is ranked 6^th by Google when you type in Josh Fuller.

Why? For the same reason they love blogs. Search engines feed on content, blogs and micro-blogs are constantly adding new content. If you are tweeting about “surfing Costa Rica” and over the course of a month, you tweet 35 times all with the keyword “surfing Costa Rica,” and you have 1000 followers you are communicating with. You could have “surfing Costa Rica” thousands of times on your Twitter site and the search engines will rank you high when someone types in “surfing Costa Rica.”

If you search in Google for “Josh Fuller,” the number 6^th position is my Twitter page, http://twitter.com/billionaireby30. Josh Fuller is a popular name and there are millions of Myspace, Facebook, LinkedIn pages, however in just a couple months of using Twitter I was able to hold the 6^th position.

I know what you are thinking. Who cares what I just had for dinner or that I’m sick of studying for my Econ 101 final. While many people do tweet about pointless drivel, the search engines love Twitter.
