Jack Nielsen’s latest study show’s 90% of the online community users are “lurkers.” (read or observe without contributing) Only 9% contribute “a little” and 1% actively contribute. So only 1% of your visitors will actively contribute, that’s 1 out of 100.

As a reader, you probably like to read the comments left on sites you visit. When you see several comments on a post, you know that people are being affected by the material. Most people comment because they gained information from the post. As humans we often associate quantity with good. I you are reading an article about Craigslist Marketing and there are 350 comments, you will instinctively feel the article must be good.

So how do you get people to comment? Ask for a comment. Most people don’t do this. If you invite comments you will get them. Write things like “What is your opinion,” or “Show me you are alive.”

When a hotel says they have the most comfortable beds in the world, you know that the statement is coming from the hotel and they are trying to sell you. When you go to a company’s website you are no longer going to see a sales letter trying to get you to buy something. Instead you will see a site with 5,000 members who are offering their experience in their dealings with the product or service.

Think about it from a consumer’s stand point. What would you think if you saw 5,000 people who bought xyz product/service, and they all wrote glowing reviews? Most of us would think, all those people can’t be wrong, so I know I’m not getting scammed. You get a sense of trust in the company or person selling the product.

If you had 5,000 people who bought xyz product/service, and they all wrote horrible reviews, you can see how that would be horrible for sales. It’s very hard to fake 5,000 negative reviews.

If you can offer value, you could have 5,000 customers building your brand, as well as doing the selling for you. On average, 70% of what we talk about daily, centers around products, services, and news. We talk about great products, crappy products, wonderful service and annoying service.

The best part of this technology is that it is extremely simple and doesn’t cost much money to implement. Most website templates already have comment boxes installed. You can easily add comment boxes to your site with simple plug-ins. You can control the comments and only let the positive ones be posted. Imagine getting free feedback from the marketplace on your products/services. If 100 are complaining about how confusing your instruction manual is, that’s a clear sign you need to make changes.

It should be clear by now commenting is the wave of the future and can dramatically increase sales.
