How to Use Social Bookmarking to Get High Quality Traffic?

Over the years I’m sure you’ve seen some pretty cool things on the Internet. When we find an interesting site, naturally we bookmark it. If I wanted to share with you a list of my favorite “bookmarked” sites, how could I do it? Of course I could send you an email with the URL of each website, but that would be extremely time consuming. A better option would be to put these “bookmarked” URL’s on a public website so anyone can view them.
To help solve this problem, Social Bookmarking sites were created. With social bookmarking sites you can bookmark your favorite web sites and “tag” them with keywords and make them available to the rest of the world.
The social bookmarking process is extremely simple. First you sign up for free, then you can submit:
· URL
· Description
· Notes about the URL
· Tags (keywords)
· Options to make public or private
Social bookmarking sites are an extremely effective method to market your business online.
Here are 10 reasons why you should use the power of social bookmarking?
1. Quality Traffic. Every time someone clicks on a link you submitted to the social bookmarking site, you receive a backlink to your site.
2. Search Engine Love. The search engines love social bookmarking sites, and the top social bookmarking sites like Digg and StumbleUpon have page ranks of 8.
3. Search Engine Ranking. One of the factors search engines use to rank sites are the number of links coming to a site. Getting hundreds of visitors to your site is a great way to boost your search engine ranking.
4. Boost Your Popularity. The more people who visit your site, the more potential followers you could have. If your site provides value, then they will return and could tell their friends.
5. Provides External Meta Data (keywords and tags). Most people don’t realize social bookmarking sites help the search engines understand exactly what you website is about. The categories and tags define your site to the search engines.

1. Quality Content. Don’t submit crap, it must be the highest quality content.
2. Submit Everything. Every time you create anything new online like a new website, blog entry, images, videos, etc submit the link to the social bookmarking site. This will help your site get indexed very quickly by the search engines. The quicker you can get in the search engines and ranking for keywords, the quicker you can be earning by organic search engine traffic.
3. Newsworthy. Make sure what you are sharing is newsworthy. Users have the option to vote on all submitted links. If you get too many negative votes, then your link could be removed.
4. Get Friends to Vote. The more votes your links get, the more love they will be given. This also appeals to our voyeuristic nature. Most of us like see what other people are looking at and what they find interesting.
5. Correctly Label the Title. Make sure to put your target keyword in the title. The title is the first thing people will see. Don’t put your URL in the title.
6. Make Them Look. Write an effective headline as your title. You will have competition in your niche and a unique title (headline) will set your link apart.
7. Be Descriptive. Add a description that has as many details and keywords as possible. Make sure you actually describe the link. You only have a few lines to persuade someone to click on your link.
8. Correctly Tag. Add tags (keywords) to your link. Make sure they are unique and descriptive. Try to have your tags the same as in the title and description.
9. Short and to the Point. Remember you only have limited room for the Title and Description. They need to be descriptive and tight.
10. Vanity URL. Put your keyword in the URL of your social bookmarking profile. As a marketing consultant, I brand my name “Josh Fuller,” so my URL is http://digg.com/users/JoshFuller
11. Customize Your Profile. Spend time optimizing your profile. Be as descriptive and real as possible. Who likes to connect with a faceless corporation? I certainly don’t.
12. Eye Catching Picture. A picture is worth a thousand words. I use a picture of me in my H2 Hummer as my profile picture and I get a lot of compliments. In all our marketing efforts we want a reaction. Boring never sells.
13. Correct Category. Make sure you pick the correct the Category/ Topic. You would be surprised how many people get lazy here.
14. Make it Public. You don’t want your submitted content to be private. Our goal is to have other people and the search engines find it.
15. Submit Something Controversial. Don’t be afraid to make waves. Have an opinion. Get as far away from the middle ground as you can. You can submit links to the same things as everyone else or you can have an opinion, challenge others, make people think and make them respond.
16. Submit a Current Affair. What’s hot right now? I just read an article on Digg about Michael Jackson’s fake nose, very interesting.
17. Submit, then Submit Again- Submit your links to more than one social bookmarking site. If you submit 10 links to the top 10 social bookmarking sites. You will have your link displayed 100 times. If over the course of a year, each link is viewed 200 times, then your links would be viewed 20,000 times! That is a lot of traffic to your site.
18. Don’t Be Salesy. Never submit sales letter. Never, Never, Never. Use social bookmarking to drive traffic to your website that should do the selling for you. The social bookmarking community will spot a sales pitch a mile away.
19. Stay Competitive. Since social bookmarking is such an effective free traffic building platform, your competition will be there shortly, if they aren’t already.
20. Don’t Half Ass it. As will anything in life, if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well. If you are going use the power of social bookmarking sites, really go for it.
21. Build Your Network. You are allowed to add friends and communicate with other like minded individuals. This is an extremely effective strategy to gain loyal followers and drive traffic to your site.
22. Don’t Submit Only Your Own Work. Submit pages that link to your site. Think about it, if traffic to those pages goes up, then so will traffic your pages. Also submit cool items from others sites that are related to your niche. If you only submit your own content, search engines could view your account as just trying to “influence” the search engines and they could stop ranking your account.
23. Spread it Out. Submit your pages slowly over time. Don’t post them all at once to avoid being viewed as spamming.
24. Stay Consistent. To have success with social bookmarking sites takes consistent effort. Consistent effort will always yields consistent results.
25. Get started. Your site won’t get thousands of visitors from social bookmarking unless you get started. Remember “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
