Have you ever typed your website into a search engine expecting to see your site, but much to your disappointment, your site wasn’t there? Search engines read through all the information on the web and create an index of it. The index allows a search engine to take a search from a user and give them pages to match it. For example, if I type in “pizza delivery,” a search engine would search their pages, and show the results; Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Papa John’s, etc.So how do you get your site into the index?  

In order to give relevant results, the search engines have to continually crawl the web. They have a list of all the websites and pages that they have “indexed.” So how do you get your site into the index?

1.      Write quality useful content, which will get your site indexed naturally.

2.      Submit your site to Google, http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl. This method could take a couple months.

3.      Get incoming links from sites that have already been indexed. Comment in forums and put a link to your site in the signature. Or you can go to a relevant blog and post a “real” comment. Don’t post spam.

4.      Ask another relevant site to link to you. Tell them you will add their site to your site.

5.      Add your link to your other sites. Do you have a blog? If not, go to blogspot.com or wordpress.com and create a free blog. Write a couple posts and add links to your site.

6.      Create a free Google Analytics code and install the analytics code into your site.

7.      Create and submit a sitemap to Google Webmaster Central.

8.      Submit your blog RSS feed to Technorati and Feedburner

9.      Don’t use only flash in your site. Google spiders can’t read flash.

10.  Be patient. If you just focus on building your site, you will eventually get indexed.
