Top 30 Pay Per Click Marketing Tips

Pay per clicking marketing is a quick and easy way to get traffic to your site. However to make your pay per click marketing work, it takes a bit more time and understanding.

Here are 30 secret tips the world’s top Internet marketers use to create effective and profitable pay per click marketing campaigns.

  1. Take your time in the beginning. Even though you can get started in minutes, only fools rush in. I know you are excited about making money, but first understanding how the pay per click process works.
  2. Use Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool www.google.com/adwords/keywordtool to create an effective list of targeted keywords/ keyword phrases. Your whole pay per click campaign is based on your keywords. If you have keywords that don’t relate to your business, you will waste a lot of time and money.
  3. Organize your keywords list into a group of keywords, called an “Ad Group.” If you own a Mexican Restaurant in Newport Beach, Ca, you would want to have at least two Ad Groups. One, would be “Mexican Restaurant Ad Group” and you would put in keywords like; Newport Beach Mexican food, Mexican restaurant Newport Beach, etc. Your next Ad Group would be something like Mexican Food and you would put in keywords like; authentic tamales, carne asada burritos, order fish tacos, etc.
  4. Create ad variations for each “Ad Group.” Write a different ad for every “Ad Group.” The more targeted the focused the more effective it will be.
  5. Write ads for your target audience. One of the best parts about a pay per click campaign is that you can target your exact audience. If you own a Mexican restaurant, most likely you wouldn’t want to target fine dining restaurants.
  6. Write headlines that pull. Use words like; free, proven, limited time only, award winning, secret, etc.
  7. Add a “call to action” to your ad. Use words like; “call now,” free offer today only,” etc.
  8. Target the global market. You can choose from nearly 200 countries and multiple languages.
  9. Use geo-targeting to put your ads in front of people in your geographic territory. One of my clients was a mental health therapist in Seattle Washington. It didn’t make sense for them to run ads in New York or Miami.
  10. Use the Ad Scheduling feature to select the time your ads run. If your Mexican restaurant closes at 8:00 pm, then you don’t want to pay for people searching for Mexican food delivery at 9:00 pm.
  11. You have limited space. Keep in mind you only have 25 characters for the HEADLINE, 35 characters for DESCRIPTION 1, and 35 characters for DESCRIPTION 2, DISPLAY URL (35 character max) and DESTINATION URL (1,024 characters max)
  12. What is the goal of your pay per click campaign? Do you want a sale, phone call, for the customer to request more information, connect via email, request a quote, free sample, newsletter, set up a meeting? You ad and site should be tailored to what you are after.
  13. Check what your competition is doing. Run a search for your keywords and see what comes up. Take a look at the ads. What ads stand out? Which ones would you click on?
  14. Check the amount of your direct competition. Put “allintitle:” then the keyword and press search. The results are your direct competition. If you type in “marketing consultant ca” there are 307,000,00 results. When you type in “allintitle: marketing consultant ca,” the results are those who you are directly competing against is only 7,380. It is much easier to compete against 7,380 vs. 307,000,000.
  15. Don’t blow your wad. Start small when bidding, the minimum is $0.01. You can always increase your bids.
  16. Bid Smart. Most people bid in predictable even patterns like $0.20 or $1.00. If you bid in unpredictable patterns like $0.21 or $1.01 you can often control the top spots.
  17. Use pay per click management. Set you maximum bid at your limit budget. If your budget is $100 per month, then your daily budget would be $100 divided by 30 or $3.33 per day.
  18. Think twice about running your ads in the content network. Studies show the conversion rates of the content network are very low.
  19. Track your ads in terms of sales and other things. Just because you haven’t made sales from your pay per click campaign doesn’t mean it is a failure. Every time you get a hit to your website you are rewarded by the search engines. Pay per click marketing can be an effective branding strategy that will have long term benefits.
  20. Use your ads to drive traffic to specific pages of your site, rather than to only your homepage. Send people to your contact page, reservation page, etc.
  21. Pay per click marketing should be one component of your marketing campaign. Pay per click marketing works best with a comprehensive marketing campaign. If someone types in “marketing consultant Newport beach” and your pay per click ads are in the sponsored results that can be an effective marketing tool. However how much more effective would it be if you were at the top of the sponsored results AND you dominated the first two pages of organic results?
  22. Watch out for recommendations. After all the pay per click companies want you to spend as much money as possible. They are constantly encouraging you to increase your bid and raise your budget, use common sense and caution.
  23. Consider hiring a third party to manage your pay per click campaign. Sometimes it’s smarter to hire a company to set up your pay per click campaign and have them manage it for a couple of months. Then once you have a campaign that is on autopilot you can run it yourself. To have a professionally managed pay per click campaign for only a couple hundred dollars email josh@chaostobeauty.com.
  24. Spend time reviewing your campaign. The first time you do anything will most likely not be your best performance. Practice makes perfect. You need to tweak the bids, keywords, ads, description, headlines, etc.
  25. Use negative keywords which will block any searches that contain keywords you don’t want searchers to associate with your company. Common negative keywords are; free, trial, risk free, cheap, etc.
  26. Use the “broad match” feature to get more clicks from your keyword list. If one of your keywords is “surfboard,” then the broad match feature will show related searches like; shortboards, longboards, paddleboards, etc.
  27. Track you results. How many clicks convert into customers? How much profit do you make from an Adwords lead? Use Adwords’ “Conversion Tracking” tool to monitor how much value the clicks bring to your business.
  28. Dollars in dollars out. Calculate your return on investment (ROI). If you are spending $100 with a goal to only sell product and you haven’t made any sales in the past year, then you have a problem.
  29. Be patient. The reason 99% of people will never make a cent online is because they are not patient.
  30. Get started today. Life will always be 80% take, 20% ask. To run an effective pay per click marketing campaign you must take action.
