How to Set Up a Google Adwords Campaign?
By Josh Fuller on Jul 21, 2009 in Adwords, Google Adwords
Pay per click marketing can be a fast and effective way to get traffic through the search engines. If you are on Google and you are searching for “Josh Fuller,” Google will take your search term (Josh Fuller) and show information that it feels matches your search term most directly. Two types of results will appear on this page. The main area in the middle of the page is the organic or non paid results. At the top and to the right of the organic search results are the inorganic or paid sponsored results.
Did you know at the time of this writing there are almost a billion searches a day? Studies show more than 75% of online visitors can be reached through pay per click marketing. Google has a 75% market share in North America and in Europe and controls more traffic than Yahoo and MSN combined. The pay-per-click service on Google is called Adwords and due to Google’s sheer size, it is one of the best ones out there.
The process is simple: you create an account with Google, create an ad linking to your site, and submit a credit card. Every time someone clicks on your advertisement Google bills you whatever agreed to pay (bid) for that click.
The first step to a successful pay per click marketing program is to identify the relevant keywords. You need to find out what words will be used by online visitors for searching information or the products that are being sold through your business.
A common problem with new pay per click advertisers is that they use too many keywords. Since you pay every time someone clicks on your ad, you only want your target audience seeing your ads. For Example, let’s say you are a Marketing Consultant who lives in Newport Beach and you service small to medium companies. When Google asks you to enter your keywords or keyword phrases, you might enter:
1. Inexpensive Marketing Consultant
2. Top Internet Marketing Services
3. Marketing Consultant Newport Beach
Don’t use the word “marketing” or “Internet marketing,” because you would be attracting too large of the market. Bigger is not better in this case, start with your niche market, then add broader keywords.
Once you have your keywords, you will write your ad(s) that your prospective customers will see. You want to write an ad that grabs the reader’s attention, highlights your major benefits, and has a call to action. Here are a couple examples of ads I have written and have had success with:
