If you are looking to market your product, service, or business idea, then you should consider Craigslist Marketing. I’ve been selling everything imaginable on Craigslist since 1997 and have learned countless secrets and tricks to get your phone ringing off the hook and email inbox overflowing.

It should be your goal to get as much traffic, leads, and ultimately sales as possible. So why not advertise your business on one of the most popular sites on the Internet? The truth is, the yellow pages are a dying medium, the classified users are online and they are looking on Craigslist.

Craigslist has more than 50 million new visitors a month, and is the 7th most visited website in the world (May 12th, 2009). Craigslist is very effective if you are on a tight budget or have no budget at all. Every time I post an advertisement, I receive 2-3 calls and emails daily from individuals who are looking for my product/service. You can post ads all over the world and in virtually any market.

Keep in mind that with any free forum on the Internet, there are going to be drawbacks. First you have to work hard at it, you must consistently post to get results. If you think you can just post your ad one time and get sales, you are in for a rude awakening. You need to post as much as you can, daily if possible.

Another challenge with Craigslist is you have to write effective ads. Just because you post an ad doesn’t mean any one will respond. To get responses, you need to write pulling ads, constantly change your ads, edit ads, and test.

I use Craigslist to try different headlines and see which ones pull the best. Intelligent marketers don’t assume they know what the market wants. As marketers, we don’t have the right to predetermine what the market wants and what headlines, hot-buttons, pricing, and approaches will be the most effective. At the time of writing this article, I was in the process of running a national radio campaign and I wanted to know which headline pulled the best. I posted the following two ads:

1. Make $10,000 a month No Selling
2. Business Partner Needed to Earn $10,000 a Month!

Craigslist is a perfect free tool to find the answer. Do you know which one pulled the best? I received 8 times more responses from the second ad “Business Partner Needed to Earn $10,000 a Month!”
