Top Five Ways to Use Controversy Marketing to Explode Sales

  1. Go Against a Long Held Belief- We are conditioned, brainwashed to believe certain things are facts and we accept them as such. For example, most people believe, “You must attend a four year college if you want to get a good job.” Challenge that belief with “Successful 19 Year Old College Dropout Says, If You Want to Be a Billionaire, Don’t Go to College.”
  2. Disagree With an Expert- Our society puts “experts” on a pedistool and what they say is often deemed as fact. Don’t be afraid to disagree with an expert if you believe the contrary view. For example, Jim Rogers an Investment Guru, is regularly on business new stations, because he vehemently opposes the economic policies of our government. He says the first thing our country needs to do to get out of this recession/ depression is to abolish the Federal Reserve and fire Ben Bernake. Not exactly as politically correct as raising taxes.
  3. Align Yourself With a Controversial Topic or Event- There are many websites that get tons of traffic because they provide very interesting content on UFO’s, conspiracy theories, mud wrestling, etc.
  4. Report on a Controversial Topic- We all know The National Enquirer reports on strange, unusual, and controversial topics and we have all been guilty of reading a page or two in line at the grocery store.
  5. Do Something Controversial or Unusual- Richard Branson once rode down Time Square, New York in a tank to celebrate his Virgin Cola product launch. Dennis Rodman use to dye his hair a variety of different colors. On my website I put pictures of me surfing, modeling, etc. Don’t be afraid to be shocking
